The first isolation of influenza virus type A(H1) in the 2000/01 season, December 2000 - Shizuoka
(IASR 2001;22:6-6)

The case was a 4-year and 2-month-old girl complaining of fever (39.0C). She was suspected to have upper respiratory tract infection, and visited a nearby pediatrician on December 11, 2000. The rapid influenza test (Directigen Flu ATM) was positive, thus her nasopharyngeal swab was forwarded to the Shizuoka Institute of Environment and Hygiene.

The specimen was inoculated onto MDCK cells and cytopathic effect was observed on the fourth day. Hemagglutination titer against turkey RBCs was 1:64. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test was carried out using ferret antisera provided by NIID for the 2000/01 season. The results showed HI titer of 1:640 for A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) (homo-titer 1:640), 1:20 for A/Moscow/13/98(H1N1) (homo-titer 1:2,560), and less than 1:10 for A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2) (homo-titer 1:2,560).

In Shizuoka Prefecture influenza activity remained at 0.37 case per sentinel site (Week 49, 2000).
