Isolation of an influenza virus type A(H3N2) from a 1-year-old girl diagnosed as acute encephalopathy, November 2000 - Kobe City

On November 21, 2000, a 1-year and 8-month-old girl became comatose with fever (40C) and convulsion. She was diagnosed as acute encephalopathy at a hospital in Kobe City. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and sputum were collected and inoculated onto MDCK cells. Both specimens yielded an influenza virus with hemagglutination titer of 1:128 (CSF) and 1:64 (sputum). Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test using ferret antisera provided by NIID resulted in HI titer of 1:2,560 (CSF) and 1:1,280 (sputum) for A/Panama/2007/99 (homo-titer 1:2,560).

She recovered from illness with motor, intelligent, and behavioral disturbances. In order to understand etiology of pediatric encephalitis/encephalopathy due to influenza, further molecular analysis of the isolates is being carried out.
