The first isolation of influenza virus (type A/H3N2) in the 2000/01 season, September 2000 - Hiroshima
(IASR 2000; 21: 268-268)

The first influenza virus isolation in this season was done in Hiroshima Prefecture from an 8 years old boy. He presented with cough and fever (40C) and visited a nearby pediatrician on September 4, 2000. He was diagnosed as acute bronchitis, and the nasal discharge was collected for viral examinations. His family did not have similar symptoms, and neither had an episode of recent international travel.

RS virus antigen was not detected by the RS test kit, then the specimen was inoculated into MDCK cells at our institute. An influenza virus A/H3N2 was isolated.

The isolated strain demonstrated hemagglutination (HA) against red blood cells of the chicken (16HA) and the guinea pig (32HA). Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test using ferret antisera provided by Dept. of Virology I, NIID, revealed HI titers of 1,280 and 320 for A/Sydney/5/97 (H3N2) and A/Panama/2007/99 (H3N2), respectively.
